To live awake in what feels like a world fast asleep is an experience both extraordinary and profoundly disorienting. When you begin to rise from—or have completely shed—the layers of conditioned self, the world you once understood feels unfamiliar, almost dreamlike. It’s as if you’re the only person at a masquerade who’s forgotten their mask, quietly observing the roles and scripts everyone else seems to follow so easily.
This isn’t about feeling superior. I share these reflections with humility and deep respect, knowing that awakening is a journey destined for all, each at their own pace. I hold compassion for the suffering that comes with being lost in the dream—because the dream feels very real while you’re in it.
Once you’ve truly seen beyond the illusion—once you know who you’re not—it’s nearly impossible to return to your old role. It’s like trying to rekindle a relationship you’ve come to realize should end; the clarity makes going back unthinkable.
The first steps on this path can feel especially unsettling. I remember those early days: the world seemed like the set of “The Twilight Zone,” a show my brother and I watched as kids. Suddenly, the familiar felt strange, and I became aware of scripts and roles that no longer fit. It was as though I’d landed in a once-beloved country but forgotten the language. Yet, over time, it became clear that awakening isn’t about blending in or relearning old habits—it’s about living freely, authentically, and letting Love move through every breath.
What makes awakening so disorienting is that the person who “belonged”—to family, work, or social circles—no longer exists in the same way. Try explaining that to relatives or colleagues! Understandably, there may be moments of loneliness. But that loneliness belongs to the ego’s story. The deeper reality is that you’re resting in pure Awareness, and in truth, everyone and every aspect of this world is part of that.
Support & Practical Guidance
Isolation might seem tempting, but awakening is not an escape from being human—it’s a full-hearted embrace of life as it really is. If you’re awake in a sleeping world, your presence is gentle and compassionate. There’s no need to shake others awake; instead, you offer kindness and honor the unity beneath all appearances. The perception of separation and duality is simply another part of the dream.
Awakening isn’t an endpoint—it’s a new beginning. The first glimpse of truth opens the door, but it’s through continued integration that the door stays open and the journey deepens. Ordinary life becomes the field where awakening is embodied, where Love learns to walk, speak, and breathe through you.
Finding supportive community can be invaluable. Participating in online groups, such as the Awakening Awareness Sanctuary I’ll be offering in 2026, provides sacred space for gathering, sharing presence, and deepening our recognition of unconditional, infinite Love. Keep your grounding practices simple. Let everyday moments remind you that Love is here, woven into the fabric of life. And don’t hesitate to find humor in it all—laughter helps us integrate and reorient, making the journey lighter and more joyful.
Integration
Living awake in a sleeping world may feel unsettling at times, but ultimately, it’s about resting in Love, laughing with the dream, and remembering there was never any true separation. The world, in all its appearances, has always been part of you.
Namaste.
