Awakening: Unveiling the Face of Grace

Unconditional Surrender: Direct path to Peace

Grace is mentioned throughout the ages, but what is Grace? Since Grace is of Divine Order, it is elusive and very difficult to put into words. Mysterious, indescribable, unknown, and ineffable comes to mind. Yet it almost is easier to say what it is not. Grace is not an external phenomenon. It is not bound by natural laws. It arises when one is truly open to receiving it and turns inward. Grace is of Divine decree and when it unveils itself, you know it. Grace leaves an unforgettable imprint and reveals itself as the presence of the One radiant heart which is forever free. Grace operates through its own higher laws and in 1946, Ramana Maharshi affirmed that the presence of Grace is so powerful that it “is capable of altering the very fabric of Destiny.”

The face of Grace is likely to unveil Itself during the awakening process. But how? And is there anything you can do to support the unveiling? The answer is yes. You must be willing to deeply surrender your attachment to the separate self.

If you want to continue doing things your way, the unveiling will not occur. It can’t. Each veil masks the truth of our shared Being and remains in place when we insist that our individual, conditioned self knows what is best. This is false pride and leads to great suffering. And yet, suffering is sometimes needed to wake us up from the conditioned self.

We have been conditioned to believe that we are the body-mind, and this false self truly thinks it is marching to its own drummer. If you want to truly wake up to your essential nature, the question becomes: are you willing to surrender the belief that you are the doer? The thinker? The seer? The chooser? Surrendering is not about giving up your actions in the world but surrendering to the idea that you are in control of your life.

Deep periods of surrendering precipitated the deepest part of my own awakening. And ongoing surrendering led to a spontaneous energetic awakening which some call kundalini. I still surrender every day. I surrender attachments, preferences, desires, ambitions, opinions, judgments, resentments…anything that appears to identify with a separate self.  Though peace and contentment are experienced daily, old conditioning still emerges. But practicing the art of surrender quickly dissolves any feelings of separation hidden behind a veil. Surrendering continues to be one of my most sacred daily practices along with contemplation and self-inquiry.

Right now, allow yourself to surrender. Surrender the belief that you are in charge of life, and bask in the freedom from seeing there is no “you” in charge of anything. There is only the radiant face of Grace flowing through everything and you are That.

Namaste.
